Description
According to IDC, the VoIP market is projected to grow at 50% per annum on a conservative basis for the next five years. By 2005 over 20% of all calls will occur over the Internet or corporate intranets. Gateways that can transmit voices over a company's otherwise data-only IP networks are expected to serve as precursors for translation software that will send voice, fax, and video over the Internet. Networking expert Gil Held shows network managers techniques that can be used to transport real-time voice conversations over networks designed for data transmission. Features of the book include: applications notes in each chapter showing how to implement the technology, such as how to route call centre calls over an IP gateway; cutting edge material on voice over IP gateways and QoS (quality of service), including why it's needed, and how it can be obtained; and in-depth explanation of how to transmit voice over private IP networks, the Internet and intranets.
