The forestry world is being flooded by biodiversity information related to different disciplines, geographical areas, scales of observation, organisms and, not the least, to different interests of various stakeholders. This publication aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the forest biodiversity and a variety of forests in Europe. The review of the structural, compositional and functional aspects of European forest biodiversity is the most extensive part of this paper. It concludes with a discussion on the difficulties, improvements and options for the future assessment, monitoring and evaluation of the forest biodiversity in Europe.
