Description and Table of Contents

Description

This text reprints two major radical narratives which first appeared in Chartist newspapers. Thomas Doubleday's work combines Utopian politics with Bunyanesque satire to tell the story of the journey of Radical and his family from the City of Plunder to the City of Reform. Wheeler's "Sunshine and Shadow" is the only serialized novel to have been published in the "Northern Star". It combines fictional biography with historical chronicle to form the first truly working-class novel. Both texts offer an insight into the literary achievements of the Chartist movement. Each is fully annotated and the editor provides an introduction to each story and a bibliography of recent scholarship.

Table of Contents

  • Thomas Martin Wheeler, "Sunshine and Shadow" (1849-50).
