Description
Based on an international workshop held in St. Petersburg, Russia, this volume examines public health issues related to infant and child nutrition in developing, transitional, and industrialised countries. Chapters discuss the interaction between malnutrition and infectious diseases and the consequences and prevention of micronutrient deficiencies.Full consideration is given to interventions for promoting breast feeding and strategies for reducing HIV transmission through breast feeding. The contributors review various programs for improving complementary feeding and methods for preventing microbial contamination of complementary foods. Also included are discussions on the role of infant nutrition in preventing adult health problems such as obesity
