内容説明

Diabetes may be defined as "a chronic metabolic disorder that is characterized by an elevation of the blood glucose concentration caused by a relative or absolute deficiency of insulin". This definition encompasses the two main types of primary diabetes, and, in addition, the many, though rarer, causes of secondary diabetes. Diabetes not only causes profound abnormalities of carbohydrate metabolism, but also affects protein and fat metabolism, leading to a catabolic state. If left untreated, diabetes will ultimately lead to a state that may be best described as "metabolic chaos". This book presents contemporary knowledge on the subject, and discusses the worldwide implications of the disease.
