The 3rd International Conference on Quality, Reliability and Maintenance (QRM 2000), draws together a wide spectrum of diverse international expertise and experience. This is distilled into the papers in this volume. Practising engineers are challenged with the formidable task of simultaneously improving quality control, raising the level of reliability and reducing the costs and down-time due to maintenance. Developments in technology, systems and training all provide the tools to help professionals meet the challenge. The material gathered here relates to some of the best current practice and research. Five main themes are featured: quality reliability; maintenance management; condition monitoring; design for quality, reliability and maintenance; and education, training and medical. The "Quality Reliability" and "Maintenance Management" themes address a range of ideas, report on current research and bring case studies from industry. Information in the section on "Condition Monitoring" provides a well balanced menu of current leading edge practice, with particular emphasis on advances in hardware, monitoring and analytical techniques. The "Design for Quality Reliability and Maintenance" contributions are largely based in a wide variety of in situ design solutions, and therefore provide particularly interesting case studies. Education and training play an increasingly important role as a foundation for all engineers. "Education Training and Medical" papers cover professional development, in-house training, education by the Internet, and much more.
