内容説明

The Malaysian political system incorporates a mix of democratic and authoritarian characteristics. In this account, the author argues that, while they may appear contradictory, the responsive and the repressive features of the system combine in an integrated and coherent whole. In particular the author explains how the dominant Malay party Umno manages to maintain support from the Chinese, Indian and East Malaysian minorities to control parliament and government. Government control of an overtly democratic system has steadily grown, as has executive control of the government, and Crouch's analysis confirms that Malaysia is unlikely to move swiftly towards a full democracy in the near future.
