内容説明

This is the first biography of one of the most acclaimed African American writers of the past century. Author, intellectual, and social critic Ralph Ellison (1914 1994) was a pivotal figure in American literature and history. Universally acclaimed for his masterpiece of modern fiction, Invisible Man, and, more recently, Juneteenth, Ellison was recognized with a stunning succession of honors, including the 1953 National Book Award, the 1955 Prix de Rome from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and election to both the National Institute of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. "Ralph Ellison: Emergence of Genius" chronicles his coming of age, tracing Ellison's path from poverty in Dustbowl Oklahoma to his rise among the literary elite, exploring his relationships with other literary stars, especially Langston Hughes and Richard Wright. This is a seminal, long-deserved examination of one of the most influential writers of the century. Lawrence Jackson (Baltimore, MD), Assistant Professor of English at Howard University, won a W. E. B. Du Bois Fellowship from Harvard to complete this book. He holds a PhD in English and American literature from Stanford University.
