内容説明

In this volume the author reveals just how pervasive a Christian discourse was in shaping the terms of British Imperial rule, whether it be the Government of India Act, the Simon Commission, or the Round Table Conferences. Throughout, the Christian's lexicon was restricted to a tradition of orientalism in which British for India was seen to facilitate the working of Divine Providence. It explores relevant aspects of church historiography, the publications and activities of the Indian YMCA and Quaker activists and in the final chapter draws these strands together in the context of "subaltern studies".
