Description
The nayakas (state administrators and revenue collectors) played a very important role in the Vijayanager kingdom in south India, from the 15th to the early 17th century. This detailed statistical analysis of 1030 names of nayakas appearing in 568 inscriptions in Tamil Nadu (recording grants of various kinds over the period from 1326 to 1675) throws light on the nature of the Vijayanagar state and the role of its key functionaries.
