内容説明

A companion work to "Essays on the Philosophy and History of Art" (August 2001), this is a biography of the influential figure, Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717-68), a scholar who contributed greatly to the development of aesthetics. Winckelmann, German classical archaeologist and art historian, is considered the founder of neoclassicism and of systematic art history. His masterpiece, "Geschichte der Kunst des Altertums" (1764), surveys the history of Greek Art and sets forth his theories on its fundamental aesthetic principles. Focusing on two periods of his life - his time in Germany (1717-55, Volume 1), and in Rome (1755-68, Volumes 2 and 3) - this three-volume work offers insights into the life and times of this great scholar. Reprinted here from the rare second enlarged German edition, this text is a biographical resource for scholars of aesthetics and art history.
