Description
When the editors of "Basic Reproductive Medicine" were asked to organize a course on the subject for the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Science and Technology, they found that although many excellent texts existed treating clinical application--including those in obstetrics, gynecology, and urology--the integrated literature covering the subject from the fundamental, pre-clinical point of view left much to be desired in terms of ease of use, comprehensiveness, currency and relevance to clinical problems. It was to meet this need--a need shared by teachers in medical programs, house staff members, fellows approaching national boards, and clinical practitioners who wished to update their information--that the editors undertook the preparation of the five volumes in this series."Volume 1: Basis and Development of Reproduction, " provides a dynamic unfolding of the subject, from conception through gestation to birth and the successive stages of human growth. It covers the genetics of sexual differentiation, the embryology of sexual manifestations, and the postnatal development of the individuals--from the sexual play of infants, through the maturation of the endocrine system and the phases of puberty and adolescence, to the emergence of sexually functioning adults and the biological and behavioral factors that determine or influence their roles. The book consists of five chapters: "The Genetics of Sex in Development, " Paul S. Burgoyne; "Normal and Abnormal Development of the Reproductive Tract, " Don W. Fawcett; "The Development of Adult Reproductive Endocrine Function, " R. Wilen and F. Naftolin; "Puberty and Adolescence, " R. Wilen and F. Naftolin; "Physiological and Psychological Aspects of Sexual Development and Function, " Leon Eisenberg.
