Description and Table of Contents

Description

This essay and the translation of original Spanish texts attempts to place the early Dominican contribution into focus. It restricts its ambit to the time span from 1510 to about 1548. It excludes the activites of the Dominican Order's most celebrated son, Las Casas. In some respects the prominent friars mentioned in this paper may well be regarded as Las Casas' forerunners. The text is divided into three main sections: activites on the idland of Espanola and their scho in Spain; activities in Mexico proper and Guatemala; and missions to the Mixtecs in Oaxaca al environs.
