内容説明
This study explores "Brut" in relation to its intricate treatment of language, nationalism, and historical identity. It examines the past 150 years of Brut scholarship, and demonstrates how the Brut narrative representations of secrecy, exemplified by Layamon's repeated and provocative use of the word rune, serve as tropes for the poem's larger themes of political power, historical interpretation, and national origin. By combining a detailed and critical assimilation of Brut scholarship with new readings of key narrative themes, this study postions Layamon as an original and complex figure in the important field of Medieval historical writings.
