この絵本の舞台は、大阪府堺市です。１９４５年７月９日から１０日未明の大阪堺大空襲で、なくなった人のかずは１，３９４人、けがをした人のかずは１，５７４人、その中には、家族が全部死んでしまって、だれも探してくれず、身元もわからない“ななしのごんべさん”が、たくさんいたそうです。
