Today, there is an increasing focus on the sustainability of the quality of life in cities. This involves many aspects such as land-use, recreation, services and notably urban transport which plays an essential part due to its linking and interaction with work, residential and service areas, and which has an important bearing on air quality, safety and social aspects. The study of urban transport is complex and involves many separate disciplines as shown by the variety of papers in this book. These were originally presented at the Ninth International Conference on Urban Transport and the Environment in the 21st Century, the latest in a series detailing state-of-the-art research and possible solutions.
