内容説明

This text focuses on the eastward enlargement of the European Union, and in particular on Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia. It looks at the conceptual challenges facing the European Union due to the enlargement process, such as institutional reform, Europe's new borders and the cultural identity of an enlarged Union, but, more importantly, identifies and analyses the problems facing these three countries from a comparative perspective. Featuring contributions from across Europe and from across the political spectrum, this text analyses a broad range of issues facing the three countries in terms of political, cultural and economic issues brought about by preparations for European Union entry, rather than merely scrutinising the narrow enlargement agenda set by Brussels.

内容説明

This book is a timely and solid portrait of modern China from the First Opium War to the Xi Jinping era. Unlike the handful of existing textbooks that only provide narratives, this textbook fashions a new and practical way to study modern China. Written exclusively for university students, A-level or high school teachers and students, it uses primary sources to tell the story of China and introduces them to existing scholarship and academic debate so they can conduct independent research for their essays and dissertations. This book will be required reading for students who embark on the study of Chinese history, politics, economics, diaspora, sociology, literature, cultural, urban and women's studies. It would be essential reading to journalists, NGO workers, diplomats, government officials, businessmen and travellers. -- .

内容説明

Since the start of the new millennium, the issue of European Union enlargement has become Europe's major preoccupation. This text, the first of two volumes, deals comprehensively with this subject, covering the preparation for accession to the European Union in the Czech and Slovak Republics. The chapters focus on the conceptual challenges facing the European Union as a result of the enlargement process, such as institutional reform, Europe's new borders and the cultural identity of an enlarged Union. Each chapter also identifies and analyses the problems facing the individual East European applicant from a comparative perspective. It examines the causes and implications of the Czecho-Slovak break up and the two nations' separate road to the European Union. Featuring contributions from a varied range of experts in the field, this book should be of use to students and academics working in the field of European and European Union politics, especially those dealing with the specific topic of EU enlargement.
