Dr. Gualtieri moves into the field of cultural encounters looking at the representation of West Africa as exotic in colonial travel writing in the light of postcolonial criticism. The aim is to show how forms of cultural negotiation operate in the British colonial discourse of West Africa. Key themes related to traveling are explored to focus on how geographical locations also mark historical and cultural difference.
