Description

Perhaps surprisingly considering the importance of Oxford's university and the significance of the city as a trading centre, the county's surnames display much continuity over a long period, from the time when hereditary surnames first appeared to the 17th century and later. There is also more evidence in Oxfordshire regarding surnames and the origin of surname conventions than there is in most counties.
