内容説明
In "On the Origin of Species" (1859) Charles Darwin shook the notion of a divine creator of the universe with his evolutionism based upon chance variation and natural selection over time. But did Darwinism destroy the so-called "argument from design" to the existence of God? In Ireland, as elsewhere, this question was hotly debated by scientists, philosophers and theologians. This set, the second in the Thoemmes Press series "Irish Philosophy in the Nineteenth Century", displays the full diversity of the Irish response to Darwinism. Volume One gathers a cluster of short texts by Irish supporters and critics of Darwinism, including John Tyndall's provocative address to the British Association for the Advancement of Science in Belfast in 1874. The other essays represent a range of critical responses to either Tyndall or Darwin or both. Frances Power Cobbe, who knew Tyndall and Darwin when she lived in London, offers a purely ethical critique of the theory of natural selection, while J.L. Porter, Robert Watts, "J.G.C." and James Houghton Kennedy offer essentially theological objections.
Volume Two contains Gerard Molloy's "Geology and Revelation", a sophisticated attempt to offer a non-Darwinian theory of evolution. The third and fourth volumes consist of what is arguably the most substantial Irish response to Darwin - Joseph John Murphy's "Habit and Intelligence". Murphy is a subtle negotiator of the contested terrain between the scientific and theological world-views, going a long way with Darwin before eventually finding a space for the creative interventions of God. The fifth volume, William Todd Martin's "The Evolution Hypothesis", is primarily a critique of Herbert Spencer's "cosmic" theory of evolution and natural selection. The final volume contains the most controversial title in the set, namely Benjamin Kidd's once-popular book - indeed a Victorian bestseller - "Social Evolution".
