Europe is the world's largest construction market. The coming Single European Market and the opening up of Eastern Europe will substantially increase the amount of cross-border operations and the size of the market itself. This book is a guide to the cost of construction work across the whole of Europe. 27 countries are covered in detail (with Japan and the USA included for purposes of comparison). Featured are key data on the main economic and construction indicators; an outline of the national construction industry, covering structure, tendering and contract procedures, regulations and standards; labour and materials cost data; measured rates (in local currency) for up to 63 work items; costs per unit area for a range of building types; regional variation percentages, tax details, cost and price indices, exchange rates with # sterling and US $; and addresses of authorities, professional institutions, trade associations. To facilitate country to country comparisons the book also includes a comparative data section, where figures from the national sections are grouped in tables on construction output, input costs, costs per square metre for offices, warehouses and housing.
Figures here are given in national currency, sterling, dollars and ECUs. Finally, to assist readers whose first language is not English, the authors have provided a multilingual glossary (English, French, German, Italian and Spanish) where the construction operations priced as measured rates are fully explained in translation.
