George Grote (1794-1871) stands as the leading Victorian historian of ancient Greece. John Stuart Mill once pointed out that "there is hardly a fact of importance in Grecian history which was perfectly understood before his re-examination of it". Grote's achievement was by any criterion impressive: he overturned the traditional view of Athenian democracy as an oppressive society without individual liberty. He rehabilitated the sophists and the demagogues and traced the consitutional and social progress of the Greeks, their culture and religion, on the basis of a critical method. "The History of Greece" (1846-56) enjoyed an international reputation and its effect on Greek historical scholarship has been enormous. In the same way, Grote contributed to the inauguration of a new era of Platonic criticism. His "Plato and the Other Companions of Sokrates" (1865) became a landmark in classical studies and for some time was the standard textbook on the philosopher. With his learned criticism and solid reasoning, Grote challenged a long-established background of Platonic exegesis, and provoked a number of responses and interpretative essays by both his distinguished adversaries and his disciples. This collection of 54 reviews and essays - mostly drawn from Victorian journals - is intended, first, to set Grote's monumental work in its historical and intellectual context while, secondly, filling a gap of original sources directly related to the reception of the great classical scholar by his contemporaries, whether critical responses or interpretative essays. Moreover, thirdly, through the original sources we are able to grasp fully the magnitude of Grote's ground-breaking achievement in the field of classical studies as well as his important conceptual leap in historical understanding. At the same time, finally, the collection provides a revealing map of 19th-century classical scholarship, as it reconstructs an immensely important section of the Victorian study of the Greek heritage - an arena of thoroughly engaged scholarship and writing.
