Psychiatrist Aileen Macklin's marriage to a man she met at Sussex University in the sixties is under strain when she is called in to attend to young Gary Dunn. In and out of trouble, his mental state isn't improved by having witnessed a murder the police think he knows more about than he will say. His squalid life with a group of glue-sniffing squatters doesn't help either.
