Description

Street children are a feature of every society. In Indonesia, official research on street children primarily reflects concern for the perceived detriment to the community and the nation's prestige. Community responses are dominated by fear and distrust while the media tends towards sensationalism. This study presents a picture of street children in Java in terms of how they are perceived by others, in particular the state and civil society, and how they see themselves. Key factors that influence these perceptions are addressed, as are the extent to which these factors contribute to negative images of street children.
