Description
The second of the Asian Social Science Series, this book presents a collection of original essays on how the city-state's societal dynamics have evolved from the time of its birth as a nation in 1965, to the present day. Key areas of Singapore society are explored, contributing towards the understanding of the social organization of a city in the following areas: ethnic division in urban communities and occupations; consequences of high density living and urban relocation; urban subcultures centered around youth, consumption and deviance; urban politics and governance. Grouped under two general themes, modernization and modernity, this study reveals a gradual shift from the modernization studies of the 1970s to a more political-economic turn: this being a consequence of the influence of dependency and world systems theories in the 1980s. In the late eighties, attention was drawn to the relationship between Confucian values and the East Asian economies.
