Description

Poggendorff's comprehensive reference, "Biographic-Literary Dictionary of the Exact Sciences", has been appearing since 1863 and should be found on the shelves of every library. This beautiful and leather-bound supplement volume, consisting of three parts, contains the biographic details of ca. 800 mathematicians together with their bibliographies. There are entries for those mathematicians born between 1820 and 1920 and who have not yet appeared in the Poggendorff. The compilation is based on the comprehensive source material, lists of names and bibliographies left by the former editor, Prof. Hans Salie. Parallel to the work of the Poggendorff editors, this was reworked and completed by Dr. Heidi Kuhn. Alongside the two subvolumes with biobibliographies this supplement also contains a bibliography of the journals that - similar to that for Poggendorff Vol. VIIb - includes a breakdown of the publications cited. The supplement is intended to fill the gap between the Poggendorff "Dictionary" and the mathematicians' bibliographies found in the electronic version. Subvolume III offers not only a representative cross-section of mathematical writings from the past one-and-a-half centuries, but it also helps in bibliographic research with difficult to trace, little known publications.
