Description and Table of Contents
Description
No artist has had a greater influence in imagining and realizing the artistic potential of video and television than Nam June Paik. Through a vast array of installations, videotapes, global television productions, films and performances, Paik has reshaped our perceptions of the temporal image in contemporary art. Published to coincide with the exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum, this volume documents and interprets Paik's key television projects. John G. Hanhardt surveys and discusses the distinctive contribution Paik has made to remaking video and television into an artist's medium. He pays particular attention to Global Groove (1973) through an in-depth analysis of this seminal videotape. In addition there is a special reprint of the 1973 'Nam June Paik: Videa'n'Videology 1959-1973'. Nam June Paik's writings on the future of television will be annotated by the artist for the occasion of Global Groove 2004, which will offer insights into the impact and influence of Nam June Paik's art and ideas on the history of television and new developments in the media arts.
