The World Summit on Social Development highlighted the importance of good governance and strong public administration systems in the successful implementation of strategies to tackle poverty and increase the participation of disadvantaged groups in a globalising world. This publication reports on a follow- meeting to the Summit, held in Bangkok in December 2003, which brought together 25 experts from the Asia-Pacific region to consider the role of the State in initiatives to promote sustainable human development in the region.
