Union Catalogue of Serials presents the practical optimum for the design, compilation, and maintenance of world-wide standardized union cataloging activities. Particularly valuable for networks, bibliographic agencies, and institutions planning the establishment of a new, or the improvement of an existing, union catalogue of serials. Although the need for common standards in union cataloging has always been recognized, no single set of rules with universal applicability existed--until the publication of this exciting volume. These guidelines introduce codes of good practice and recommended standards for bibliographic and holdings control to be used in the creation and maintenance of union catalogues of serials, bearing in mind the requirements for international exchange. All countries can benefit from the universal relevance provided in these guidelines for improving physical and bibliographic access to serials resources and in making the most of opportunities provided by computerized production.
