Description
Reviews the region when it comprised various settlements, going all the way up to modern times when the region became known as Southeast Asia. The book covers the genesis of ASEAN and its early experiences with the concept of cooperation. The latest profile and a brief history of each member state is added to contribute to the readers' knowledge of the countries in ASEAN and the nature of cooperation in the region. Four important documents that are often invoked in ASEAN relations are included for reference and research. These are the ASEAN Declaration (1967), the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on the Zone of Peace, Freedom, and Neutrality (1971), the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (1976), and the ASEAN Vision 2020 (1997).
