Description

Baltimore is a city rich in civil engineering history. It is a port city. It is a railroad city. It is an industrial city. And, it is a modern city. With ASCE's 2004 Annual Conference in Baltimore, it is only natural that the Fifth National History and Heritage Congress focus on the civil engineering history of Baltimore. The seventeen papers in this collection bring to life both landmark engineering works and visionary engineers. Explorations include the Mason-Dixon Line Survey, Maryland Cross-Cut Canal, Federal Hill, Baltimore and Ohio (B&O Railroad) and 1884 Passenger Car Roundhouse, Garrett-Jacobs Mansion in Mount Vernon, and Druid Lake Dam. Several papers examine the lives of prominent engineers and architects who played major roles in developing the region, such as Benjamin Henry Latrobe, Jr. and Robert E. Lee. Other papers address the development of the water supply and wastewater treatment in the city's growth, including the Great Fire of 1904. The H&H Congress supports the continuing efforts of the ASCE Engineering Education and History and Heritage committees to develop course material for teaching civil engineering history in universities. Two papers herein illustrate such successful efforts at Johns Hopkins University.
