This collection of original essays by some of the most respected reader-response theorists here and abroad focuses on the work of Louise Rosenblatt. Her "Literature as Exploration" has for some fifty years had a significant effect on the way literature is taught in our schools. Only in the last decade, however, has the importance of her ideas about the transactional nature of reading been understood and appreciated by teachers and literary theorists. "The Experience of Reading" explores Rosenblatt's literary theories from her seminal study in 1938 to her widely praised" The Reader, the Text, the Poem: The Transactional Theory of the Literary Work" (1978).
