The author, J.M. Honiberger was a physician in the court of Ranjeet Singh at Lahore. On the death of the king he stayed on to thoroughly understand the people and the court, and the conspiracies and intrigues which brought down the Sikh kingdom. This book is full of historical sketches and personal reminiscences. Being a doctor, this narrative of his is full of medical anecdotes and old wives tales on how to cure minor medical ailments. Honiberger stayed in the east from 1815 to 1850, his sketches mainly relate to Punjab and Kashmir. This book is a reprint of the 1905 edition, and has a wealth of curious illustrations of various Sikh chiefs, and of other facets of daily life.
