内容説明
The story of Ivan Aivazovsky is peerless in the history of art. A poor boy from an obscure Black Sea port, he ended his life as the best known 19th century Russian painter in the world. A drawing he made in household charcoal on a neighbour's wall led him straight to a scholarship at the Imperial Academy of St Petersburg. He shot to international fame in his twenties: his exhibitions all over the world drew enormous crowds and earned him admiration from the likes of Horace Vernet and William Turner. In his long and colourful career, Aivazovsky claimed to have painted over six thousand pictures. Today, his work passes constantly through salesrooms and is eagerly sought after by collectors. Published on the hundredth anniversary of his death, this is the first book on the artist in English. Over two hundred of his works are reproduced here in colour, most for the first time. The lively text offers insights into the working methods of a man who raised European maritime painting to new heights.
