The rolls of parliament were the official records of the meetings of the English parliament from the reign of Edward I (1272-1307) until the reign of Henry VII (1485-1509), after which they were superseded by the journals of thelords, and, somewhat later, the commons. The rolls were first edited in the eighteenth century and published in 1767 in six folio volumes entitled Rotuli Parliamentorum, under the general editorship of the Reverend John Strachey. This new edition reproduces the rolls in their entirety, together with a few individual items published since 1783, as well as a substantial amount of material never previously published; it is complemented by a full translation of all the texts from the three languages used by the medieval clerks (Latin, Anglo-Norman and Middle English). It also includes an introduction to every parliament known to have been held by an English king (or in his name)between 1275 and 1504, whether or not the roll for that parliament survives. Where appropriate, appendices of supplementary material are also provided, and there is a General Introduction to the rolls.

The parliament of January 1327, which was called in the nameof Edward II, was instead treated as the first parliament of the reign of Edward III. It covers a very eventful reign, which was marked by political conflict, strong personal enmities and civil war, wars with Scotland and France,and the unprecedented deposition of the king in 1327 - all events reflected, directly or indirectly, within the Rolls.
An Introduction to each of the Parliaments during this period discusses the political context in which itwas held; the purpose for which it was summoned; who was summoned; and analyzes the proceedings of the parliament both as recorded in the Parliament Rolls (several of which have not previously been published) and in other sources, such as royal records and chronicles.

It begins with the parliament of 1327, during which Edward II was deposed, which was called in the name of Edward II but was treated as the first parliament of the reign of Edward III. In addition to the deposition and later murder of Edward II, this period was marked by other dramatic events: the rule of Roger Mortimer and Isabella, the former queenof Edward II; the trials in 1330 of Mortimer and his accomplices for the murder of Edward II; the renewal of war with Scotland and the path to war with France. All these are reflected directly or indirectly in the Parliament Rolls.
An introduction is provided to each of the Parliaments during this period, discussing the political context in which it was held; the purpose for which it was summoned; who was summoned; and analyzing the proceedings of the parliament both as recorded in the Parliament Rolls and in other sources, such as royal records and chronicles.

The parliaments of the 1350s and 1360s were marked by a strong sense of combined purpose as crown and political community drew together to buttress their economic interests and enjoy the benefits of peace with Scotland and France. The 1370s, by contrast, was a decade of military disaster, economic gloomand increasing faction-fighting at court. Notably, the volume provides the first ever translation of the official record of the so-called "Good Parliament" of 1376, at which Edward III's mistress and ministers were publicly exposed as enemies of the common good. This assembly was a major turning-point in political history, marking the first appearance of the office of Speaker of the House of Commons and the first use of parliamentary impeachment in medieval England.

The nine parliaments held during the reign of Henry IV (1399-1413) witnessed some of the most dramatic encounters between king and commons of the middle ages, especially those of the first seven years of the reign. Principles which were to become staples of parliamentary debate, such as the demand for redress of grievances before grant of supply, insistence on the accountability to parliament of royal ministers, and the right of those who granted taxes to determine how they should be used (appropriation of supply) were openly demanded and to some extent conceded by the king. These demands reached a climax in the Long Parliament of 1406,which lasted for nine months, twice as long as any previous English parliament, and witnessed a prolonged stand-off between king and commons. The second half of the reign saw more docile parliaments, although the struggle betweenthe king and his son, the future Henry V, for control of the executive produced some dramatic parliamentary moments such as an attempt to force the king to abdicate. These early fifteenth-century parliaments also witnessed the passing of some extremely interesting social and religious legislation on matters such as heresy, law and order and the regulation of labour.

This volume covers the first nine years of the minority of Henry VI, which saw seven parliaments. This high frequency is linked to the fact that Henry was only nine months old when hebecame king in 1422. The rolls of this period have much of interest on how government functioned during a minority. Parliament became a crucial cog in the wheel of collective and conciliar rule, and also had to deal with disputesbetween Henry's advisers. Also interesting is the transition from the regime of Henry V to that of his son. The roll for the 1423 assembly includes the inventory of Henry V's moveable goods as dealt with by his executors. That forthe 1429 meeting, during which the coronation occurred and a royal visit to France was planned, saw many significant common petitions, including that concerning the electorate of the 40s freeholder.

The impact of the king's own preferences is seen in material linked to the foundations at Eton and Cambridge which were initiated in 1440. The second session of the 1445 parliament saw the coronation of his queen, Margaret of Anjou. Growing financial problems as well as in the war with France after the defection of the duke of Burgundy from his English alliance are also revealed in the rolls.

The three parliaments of Edward IV's second reign are strikingly unbalanced. The first, which lasted from 1472-75, was from the king's point of view mainly concerned with financing theprojected war against France, but also sees the final settlement of the Yorkist regime with former Lancastrians making their peace and a further act of resumption reconsidering earlier royal grants. The last two parliaments weremuch briefer and, again from the king's perspective, mono-causal. That of January 1478 was called to try Edward's brother the duke of Clarence, although this is barely reflected in the roll itself. Five years later Edward was in search of funding for his Scottish war.
