This is a fully updated and revised edition of Principles of Critical Care (1999). Critical care is a nascent but growing specialty in India and other developing countries. It is based on the author's work and experience of almost 30 years of critical care medicines and includes guest contributions by a few specialists renowned for their expertise in their chosen fields. The book discusses various aspects of critical care medicine, including the philosophy and ethics of critical care, imaging techniques, the clinical presentation, basic physiopathology, and management of life threatening illnesses involving various organ systems of body. It also deals with critical care in trauma following open heart surgery and poisonings. The author emphasizes and provides reasoned comments on the critical care of fulminant tropical infections, particularly when complicated by multiple organ dysfunction. The concept of critical care and management strategies of life threatening situations when ideal conditions for care are not possible have been discussed.
