Description

This publication contains statistics for children looked after by English local authorities with social services responsibility, in the year to March 2004, including adoptions, care leavers aged 16 or over, and 19 year old former care leavers. Data findings for this period include: 61,100 children were looked after, one per cent more than a year earlier and five per cent more than in 2000; foster care accounted for 68 per cent of all placements, an increase of ten per cent since 2000; 3,700 children were adopted in the period, a six per cent increase on the previous year, with the average age for adoption being four years, five months; and 43 per cent of the 6,700 children care leavers aged 16 or over had at least one GCSE or GNVQ, the same as last year.
