Description
This publication contains data from child protection registers for all 150 English local authorities with social services responsibilities, covering the year ending 31 March 2004. Main findings for this period include: out of a total of 572,700 referrals, 22 per cent were repeat referrals previously made within the last year; there were 26,300 children on child protection registers as of March 2004, one per cent fewer than a year ago and 25 per cent fewer than in 1994; there were 31,000 children added to the registers and 31,200 de-registered during the year; 41 per cent of registrations related to children considered to be at risk of neglect, 19 per cent physical abuse, 18 per cent emotional abuse and nine per cent at risk of sexual abuse, these proportions having remained consistent over the last three years.
