This issue is a collection of papers given at the Cairo Papers Tenth Annual Symposium held in May 2001 on ''Elections in the Middle East.'' The papers cover parliamentary and presidential elections in Egypt, Sudan, Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon, Israel, and Algeria, held between 1999 and 2001. Papers address the issue of elections in these countries in the context of the major challenges facing them such as democratization, political stability, and political participation.
