Zdenko Zlatar explores Montenegro's transition from a tribal to a civil society. The book is both about a country and a ruler, who typified Montenegro. Zlatar compares Negos's standing in Montenegro to tribal leaders in other parts of the world, including the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa. This book also includes an extensive appendix that gathers statistical information on Montenegro's tribal structure and population.
