５日間だけ午後８時から１時間の停電になるという。夫は思った、「いやでも一緒の夕食になるだろう」。ローソクの炎の中で、妻のショーバが言った。「暗い中で言いっこするのよ。いままで黙っていたことを」（「停電の夜に」）。カパーシーは、平日は患者の言うことを医者に通訳をしているが、金曜日と土曜日は外国の観光客の案内をしている。アメリカからやってきた若いダスー家の夫人はカパーシーに思いがけない告白をした（「病気の通訳」）。女性の微妙な気持ちが見事に描き出された、味わい深い短編集。
