内容説明

Written by a well-known hydraulic and coastal engineer with more than 40 years of research and practical experience particularly in the areas of sedimentation, stratified flows, and estuarine hydraulics, Engineering Properties and Hydraulic Behavior of Cohesive Sediments presents important fundamental aspects of the hydraulic behavior of these sediments while linking these aspects to a rational approach to the solution of related engineering problems. The author concisely and rigorously presents the fundamentals of clay mineralogy and clay colloid chemistry. He emphasizes the inter-particle physicochemical forces and properties of aggregates, in particular their density, strength, and settling velocities, which control the hydraulic behavior of cohesive sediments in a form to be easily followed by readers with little or no background in these areas. He then discusses the criteria for selecting appropriate tests and field measurements, and explains the guidelines for estimating the initiation, degree, and rate of erosion, deposition, and resuspension of cohesive sediments and their application to real life problems. After presenting the mineralogical and physico-chemical properties of cohesive sediments, the author develops the governing sediment transport equations followed by the hydraulic processes of flocculation by the Brownian motion, flow-induced stresses, and differential settling. He provides a short discussion of the rheological properties of cohesive sediments suspensions and presents the fundamental aspects of erosion for dense and loose fine cohesive sediments followed by a similar presentation for deposition and resuspension. The book closes with discussions of the applications of the presented fundamental knowledge to the design of canals safe against scouring and siltation and to the control of shoaling in estuarial waterways.
