Description and Table of Contents

Description

Edgar Quinet (1803-1875) wrote the history of his early life during exile in Brussels as a fierce opponent of Napoleon III. These reminiscences fill the gap created by works which, by their controversial nature, could no longer be published in France. Quinet traces his intellectual, emotional and religious development, the story of his parents who detested Napoleon, and memories of war and occupation as seen through the eyes of a child. Quinet wanted his book to be regarded as an exemplary story of a whole generation. It provides an account of a significant period in French history and gives insights into the great French republican tradition and its parallels with the recent reversals in Central and Eastern Europe.
