内容説明

"The Centhini Story" takes the reader on an unforgettable journey through the magical island of Java. In this first ever English translation of the 19th century epic, Soewito Santoso has stayed true to the essence of the original story, making a much-loved but almost forgotten literary heritage accessible once again. The book tells the story of princess Rancapkapti and her two brothers, princes Jayengresmi and Jayengrogo, who are forced to flee their palace in the Giri Kingdom when it is attacked by the Sultan Agung of the Mataram Kingdom. Prince Jayengresmi is separated from his younger siblings, and embarks on a long quest - spanning over a decade - in order to be reunited with them. As the story unfolds, the reader is introduced to several Javanese personalities encountered on the journey, and presented with Javanese traditions, customs and beliefs. By the time the three siblings finally meet, each of them have overcome trials and tribulations and developed emotionally and spiritually. Accompanying this enchanting tale is stunning imagery of the Javanese landscape, its inhabitants and vibrant festivals.
