Description
With an increasing number of microbes becoming immune against the traditional antibiotics, antibiotic research is gaining importance. The penem antibiotics are characterized by a wide antibacterial spectrum and stability against many groups of beta-lactamases. In 1983, the penem FcE 22891, a prodrug, was selected for further development as an antibiotic agent, and it has now been proven a successful therapeutic agent. This text investigates various aspects of the new penem antibiotics including chemical properties and in vitro and in vivo antibacterial activities in both humans and mice.
