This overview of paediatrics for third-year medical students focuses on health rather than disease, and is divided into three main sections: the essentials of primary and preventive care; the most common signs and symptoms in children; and the health needs and long-term management of children with chronic conditions. The text is organized by body system, and presents signs and symptoms the way they are encountered in practice - in the form of complaints such as vomiting, diarrohea or constipation, rather than diseases such as gastroenteritis. Other topics covered include: well-child and preventive care; health promotion; illness prevention; family/community participation; HIV; child sexual abuse; care of children with Down's Syndrome; sleep disturbances; seizures; and fever.
