An essay by Vanessa Joan Muller, Christian Holler, this catalogue accompanies the exhibition of Christopher Williams and de Rijke/de Rooij at Secession, dealt with separately in two near identical volumes. In this book, Williams' photography is characterized through its critique of representation. Williams has a penchant for objects with a pragmatic design that demand specific behavior from the user, causing the commodity to triumph over the subject. Subjectivity and sociality creep in from the edges, linking issues of representation with function. The project by Williams and de Rijke/de Rooij shows where the interfaces between the two oeuvres lie, what they have in common, but also where different approaches and solutions stand in constructive confrontation.
