Description and Table of Contents

Description

Pavel Filonov (1883-1941) is the subject of several books and albums and many essays in academic compendia and catalogues. His works were exhibited both in his own lifetime and after his death. They were displayed at one-man shows at the Russian Museum in Leningrad (1988), Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (1990) and the Kunsthalle in D sseldorf (1990). Yet despite his international fame, Filonov remains one of the most enigmatic and undiscovered artists of the Russian avant-garde. This publication reproduces over three hundred works by the master, mostly belonging to the Russian Museum in St Petersburg, with contributions from the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. The results of recent research shed new light on many individual paintings and drawings and the artist's oeuvre as a whole.
