内容説明

Before The New Press first published "May It Please the Court" in 1993, few Americans knew that every case argued before the Supreme Court since 1955 has been recorded. Publication of the tapes and transcripts simultaneously delighted Americans interested in knowing more about the workings of this country's justice system, displeased the Supreme Court, which until then had a policy of restricting access to the recordings. Ultimately, in the face of public pressure, the Court reversed its stance and "May It Please the Court" went on to win the American Bar Association's Silver Gavel Award, to be a main selection of the History Book Club, and to become an American bestseller. Now for the first time, the oral arguments are presented in CD format, along with a paperback edition of the original book, at the most affordable price ever. Cases include: Roe v. Wade (abortion rights); United States v. Nixon (Watergate tapes); "New York Times" v. United States (Pentagon Papers); Edwards v. Aguillard (teaching "creationism"); Miranda v. Arizona ("the right to remain silent"); Regents v. Bakke (reverse discrimination); Tinker v. Des Moines (Vietnam protest in schools); Texas v. Johnson (flag burning); Cox v. Louisiana (civil rights demonstration); Gregg v. Georgia (capital punishment); Cooper v. Aaron (Little rock school desegregation); and Loving v. Viginia (interracial marriage).
