Description
Over the past four years, the Royal Fine Arts Museums of Belgium have undertaken a huge research project. Taking as a starting point the unique collection of fifty or so works of art the Royal Fine Arts Museums of Belgium have in their possession, three researchers have looked closely at Rubens' oeuvre - from both an historical and a material angle - with the help of the most up-to-date technologies. The collection includes signed pieces and pieces produced in Rubens' atelier as well as a series of paintings that the Antwerp master executed in collaboration with famous fellow painters such as Jan Brueghel the Elder, Anthony van Dyck and Cornelis de Vos. The works included consist of oil sketches, peinture de cabinet and alterpieces, and illustrate the extraordinary quality of Rubens' most productive period, a period in which he developed into both creative genius and entrepreneur. In addition, an extensive study of the humanist painter's artistic theories that led to the development of his paintings is also worked out.
